Rammed earth home, Whangārei Heads, Northland

Rammed earth home to be perched atop a hill, with amazing views of the surrounding countryside. The iconic, Mount Manaia is visible to the South East. The off-grid home will be owner built.

In addition to the structural rammed earth walls, naturally durable, untreated timber framing will be used to some internal walls. External structural timber will be heart grade local eucalyptus. We plan to use natural, knobbly timber knee braces to the verandah posts.

The house will have an earthen floor with pumice insulation. To the mezzanine, a timber t&g strip floor will be installed. Clay plasters will finish the internal light timber framed walls.

Corrugated roofing, with big verandas will protect the house from all but the most heavy driving rain. Skylights will be incorporated into this roof and verandah, to let in plenty of natural daylight.

The gable ends will be clad in local heart cypress weatherboards, and tilt and turn timber joinery will be used throughout.

A natural stone veneer plinth will be incorporated to some of the rammed earth walls, and this stone will also be applied to some of the column bases.
